Apple Mail

How to set up your email signature in Apple Mail on macOS and iOS.

Apple Mail on macOS

Opening Signature Settings

  1. Open Mail
  2. Go to MailSettings (or press Cmd + ,)
  3. Click the Signatures tab

Adding Your Signature

  1. Select your email account in the left column
  2. Click the + button at the bottom of the middle column
  3. A new signature will appear - give it a name
  4. In the right preview pane, select all with Cmd + A
  5. Paste your signature with Cmd + V

Important: Make sure the checkbox Always match my default message font is unchecked at the bottom of the window. If this is enabled, Apple Mail will override your signature's formatting.

Setting as Default

  1. Select your email account in the left column
  2. Use the Choose Signature dropdown at the bottom to select your new signature

Close the settings window to save.

Apple Mail on iOS / iPadOS

Apple Mail on iOS does not support HTML signatures through the built-in settings. The signature field under SettingsMailSignature is plain text only.

Workaround

To use an HTML signature on iOS:

  1. Send yourself an email from your Mac (or any other client) that already has the signature applied
  2. Open the email on your iPhone/iPad
  3. Copy the signature from the email body
  4. Go to SettingsAppsMailSignature
  5. Paste the signature into the text field

The HTML formatting should be preserved when pasting, though some complex layouts may be simplified.

Troubleshooting

Signature appears as plain text

Make sure Always match my default message font is unchecked in Mail → Settings → Signatures. This is the most common cause of formatting loss.

Signature looks correct in settings but not in sent emails

Apple Mail may re-render signatures when composing. Ensure your signature uses table-based layouts with inline styles (the Email Signature Builder does this automatically) for best compatibility.
